Start: Kalterherberg Bahnhof
End: Roermond
Route length: 157 km
Stages: 3
More info

The newly designed Rurufer Cycle Route invites you to experience around 170 kilometres of cycling through nature. As you cycle along this beautiful route, you follow the waters of the Rur River from its source in the High Fens near Botrange, Belgium, to its mouth near Roermond in the Netherlands. There is so much diversity on the route: varied bends, impressive sights, the beauty of nature and the colourful story of a changing landscape.

The ideal starting point for your trip is “Kalterherberg Bahnhof”, the final stop on the Fahrradbus Eifel route, from where you cycle along the Rur into the town of Monschau, nestled picturesquely in its Eifel valley. Traditionally known for its clothmaking, the town is best discovered on a stroll through its idyllic narrow streets with their decorative half-timbered houses. Your cycle trip then continues through the Rurtal Valley with its slate rock formations, to the village of Einruhr and the southern reaches of the Rursee Lake. From there, always with a view of the Eifel National Park, you cycle along the banks of the lake before crossing the Schwammenauel dam into Heimbach.

On the longer section towards Düren, the hilly landscape of the Eifel transforms into wide pastures. Those who prefer a shorter route can take the Rurtalbahn train from one of the many stops along the route between Heimbach and Linnich. A few kilometres further, you will be welcomed by the impressive citadel in Jülich, with its rich history. But before you get there, why not take a short detour to learn about brown coal mining in Inden and enjoy a magnificent panoramic view from the steel Indemann monument.

As you travel further through the Heinsberger Land, you will find attractive manor houses and magical waterside castles, romantic villages and enchanting lakes. The last few kilometres of the Rurufer Cycle Route take you through the fertile riverside meadow landscape, before you reach your destination, the Dutch town of Roermond. Finish with a stroll through the protected old town with its inviting shops and cafés.

The Rurufer Cycle Route can be easily divided into three stages: Kalterherberg to Heimbach (49.5 kilometres), Heimbach to Jülich (48.8 kilometres) and Jülich to Roermond (56.9 kilometres).

A trip on the LF-Maasroute long-distance cycle route gives you a good impression of the Maas, a key river in the south of the Netherlands. The route stretches more than 1,152 kilometres from the source of the river in the foothills of the French Vosges to where it flows into the sea near Hook of Holland. For an easy start, take a short trip on the Liège-Roermond section. This 60.8-kilometre stage begins with an easy ride on a car-free cycle path along the Maas through Liège. It then passes through the fascinating landscape of Southern Llimburg to Maastricht, whose historic centre is well worth a stroll.

The second stage takes you 71 kilometres from Maastricht to Roermond. Along the way, you can learn how people and the river have worked together to create a new river landscape and beautiful nature areas. From Ohé en Laak, you will cycle through the Maasplassen, the Netherlands’ largest contiguous water sports area. After crossing Stevensveert, you finally reach Roermond with its impressive Christoffelkathedraal.
